Six Month Smiles questions answered by our dentist

Ever had some questions about the popular Six Month Smiles brace? Our dentist Luton at Vogue Dental Care uses this brace to help patients correct misalignments with their front 6 teeth in an accelerated window. So let’s learn more about this brace in the FAQs section below.

What are Six Month Smiles?

Six Month Smiles is a clear brace that is designed to be visually discreet possible while also moving the most prominent 6 teeth that are on the upper and lower jaw.

Creating the aligners involves our dentist Luton conducting an exam of your mouth, the position of your teeth and your general dental health to assess whether you are suitable. If you are, we will take a mould of your teeth and then send this to a dental laboratory to have the braces created.

Can they really straighten my teeth within 6 months?

It’s in the name!

And yes, the average case of treatment with this brace takes 6 months, but we generally allow between 6-10 months in our clinic for this brace to move your teeth.

Also, with the combination of the brace being custom fitted to your front teeth, the wires and the brackets, this brace can indeed move your teeth within an accelerated time.

Will they be uncomfortable?

This brace is designed to move your teeth quickly, so a few patients have reported a bit of twinging when they first have them fitted.

But it is not bulky; therefore, it should not cause excessive rubbing against your inner cheeks or lips.

As the brace will need adjusting to move your teeth, you may experience a bit of discomfort after our team does this, but it should be manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Will I need to have teeth removed?

It is very unusual for an extraction to be needed for Six Month Smiles to work, but in practice, this does occur in around 5% of all cases.

If we feel that you have overcrowding and would benefit from having teeth extracted before the brace is fitted, we will discuss this with you.

What can be treated with Six Month Smiles?

Most patients who are suitable for treatment with Six Month Smiles have issues surrounding spacing or overcrowding in the front of their mouth.

If you have an issue with your molars, protrusion, a tooth that requires twisting or a bite issue that cannot be corrected in 6-10 months, then it is unlikely that you will be suitable for this brace.

However, we can assess your suitability at our clinic and discuss the most suitable course of orthodontic treatment with you.

Can this brace correct my teeth that have relapsed?

At Vogue Dental Care, our dentist Luton commonly treats patients who have worn braces in the past and are now experiencing dental relapsing where their teeth have moved out of alignment and back to their former positions.

This can occur for many reasons, such as not wearing a retainer. But don’t worry, this brace can and should be able to fix these issues.
